FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know

Comprehensive answers backed by the original documentation.

Has the infamous cylinder head leak been addressed?

1

Yes, definitively. In April 2013 at 179.805km the engine underwent a partial overhaul including an explicit cylinder head modification. This is the crucial update for early 964s that permanently resolves the original gasket-less cylinder base design. 1.500 km after this overhaul (July 2013), the valves were re-adjusted and the oil changed as a follow-up. A top-end overhaul was done later in 2018 at 190.601km. All documented by invoices.

What is the current oil leak status?

2

The engine is very dry. At 190.601 km the engine was partially disassembled for preventive sealing work: the cam housings were re-sealed, several rocker shafts were replaced, and 2 new valve covers were fitted. Prior to that, at 145.437 km, the crankshaft seals, power steering oil seals, intermediate shaft cover seals, and distribution housing gaskets were all renewed during a full engine-out service. This car has had its sealing issues addressed 3 times (2006, 2013, 2018), proactively rather than reactively.

Has the dual-mass flywheel been replaced?

3

Yes. The clutch and flywheel were replaced at 145.437 km in January 2006 by Blankemeijer, a respected Dutch Porsche specialist. This was a comprehensive engine-out service that also included replacement of the crankshaft and power steering seals, distribution housing gaskets, and right chain tensioner gaskets. The clutch hydraulic system was bled and the exhaust repaired at the same time.

Is the engine numbers-matching?

4

Yes. The VIN (WP0ZZZ96ZLS404970), engine and transmission numbers all correspond to the original factory specification. The car retains its matching M64/01 3.6-litre flat-six and G64 five-speed manual transaxle. A factory pre-delivery inspection document (Nacharbeitsauftrag, production number 250677) confirming colour code 550 (Linen Grey Metallic) is included in the documentation file.

The G64 five-speed manual transaxle, unique to the Carrera 4 and not shared with the C2’s G50 - shifts cleanly through all gears with no grinding, whining, or synchro wear. The clutch was replaced together with the flywheel at 145.437 km. Engine mount bolts and stabiliser links have been renewed with genuine OEM parts.

Yes. The AWD system operates as intended. There are no warning lights for the differential or ABS systems. The front ABS control unit and high-pressure pump, known potential trouble spots on the C4, located in the front luggage compartment have been inspected and are free of connector corrosion.

Yes. The spoiler control module was overhauled and tested in September 2021 by Tore Bergvill and all functions and warning indicators checked out as “OK”. The spoiler curtain was also replaced at that time.

The car wears its original factory colour: L550 Leinen Metallic (Linen Grey Metallic), a rare and highly sought-after period hue, far less common than the typical Guards Red, Black, or Grand Prix White deliveries. In 2013, the front section was disassembled and repainted to address stone chip damage, using the correct original L550 colour. Paint meter photos with depth readings are available.

The typical 964 rust-prone areas (windscreen base, battery box, kidney area, and front luggage compartment) are sound. Underbody photos are included in the gallery. A lift inspection is welcomed during any PPI. Under my possession the car was not used as a winter car and was stalled in a heated garage during winter months.

The car rides on Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tyres with N3 coding (Porsche’s own specification) mounted in December 2020 at 193,080 km. They’re fitted on genuine Porsche Cup wheels (8J x 17-ET52 & 7J x 17-ET55). I also have a set of 16-inch Design 90 (“D90”) wheels, which are the correct OEM specification for a 1990 Carrera 4. These were purchased during my ownership and are to be restored. The D90’s are available separately and can be discussed..

The brakes function correctly on all four corners. Brake fluid has been changed at regular intervals as documented. Caliper components including bearing brackets, dust caps, and bleed nipples were renewed with genuine Porsche OEM parts via Carrera Motors Sint-Martens-Latem in Belgium.

The car features a small number of subtle, driver-oriented upgrades that are popular and respected within the 964 community: an RS performance chip for improved throttle response, a Dansk 100-cell sport catalytic converter, and modern LED lighting (T-LED kit) for improved visibility/safety. The suspension has been upgraded with Bilstein B6 dampers, H&R springs, and Powerflex bushings. All modifications are reversible and the original components can be discussed.

Currently registered in Belgium as an oldtimer (O-plate) with a valid Belgian technical inspection (Autokeuring). EU export and deregistration can be arranged for international buyers.

Yes, of course! I’m welcoming any PPI by an independent Porsche specialist of the buyer’s choosing. The car can be made available on a lift and a cold start arranged. There’s nothing to hide, 188 pages of documentation and a transparent ownership history speak for themselves.

Yes, the A/C works excellently and blows cold (not ice cold as a modern car). In May 2021 the system was fully rebuilt: a new Behr evaporator and a new receiver dryer were installed, the system was pressure-tested and charged with R134a refrigerant. The condenser was also replaced with a new OE Denso unit. This is one of the most comprehensive A/C restorations you’ll find on any 964.

The suspension was comprehensively upgraded in 2021 for superior road manners. A complete Bilstein B6 damper set was installed together with H&R lowering springs. The control arm bushings were replaced and new CV boots were fitted. The result is tighter, more composed handling while retaining excellent ride quality.
